Doing Your Makeup to Look Hungover Is Becoming a Thing

August 3, 2015
How’s that for irony?

Red, puffy skin and under-eye circles are a dead giveaway that you feel like crap, but some women in Japan are actually trying to look that way.

The latest niche Japanese beauty trend is known as “byojaku” (“sickly”) and is showing up on magazine covers and social media on the other side of the world.

The look is heavy on red under-eye blush and eye bags, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reports, and there are even YouTube tutorials on how to do it.

“To create a sickly look, I need to create red-rimmed eyes,” a woman explains in this video, while liberally applying bright pink cream blush outside of and underneath her eyes.

Uh…

But it doesn’t stop there: The trend also includes creating puffy eye bags with shading or tape. This trend, known as “aegyo sal,” originated in Korea, the Daily Mail reports, and there are tutorials for it, too!

Here’s a look at the trend, up close and personal:

It’s a little backward since most of us want to cover up eye bags, patchy skin, and red-rimmed eyes when we have a cold or are hung-over. And if the tutorials are any indication, it takes time and effort to look like you feel crappy.

Isn’t it just easier to give into it when you’re sick and look healthy the rest of the time?

But who are we kidding? So many beauty trends have come to the U.S. from Japan that we’ll probably all be doing this by fall.
